--Home--News--Industry News-- Are precision machined parts prone to deformation? How to maintain stable dimensions without distortion?2026-07-09 23:35:08
"Parts measure accurately right after machining but deform overnight", "thin-wall parts distort once clamped", "stainless steel parts have drifting dimensions after machining" — nearly every customer has encountered these issues. So: how do we resolve deformation in precision part machining and achieve long-term dimensional stability?
Deformation mainly stems from material internal stress, cutting heat, clamping force, cutting force, uneven cooling, thin wall thickness and insufficient rigidity. To prevent deformation, control must start at the source.
First, stress relief. Especially for stainless steel, ferrous metals and hard plastics, stress relief treatment should be carried out before machining or after roughing to release internal tension. Second, workholding: adopt light clamping, multi-point support and fixture positioning to avoid excessive localized force.
In terms of process, follow the principle:liberal allowance for roughing, slow feed for finishing, small stock removal and multiple trimming passes, to reduce cutting heat and vibration. For deep holes, slender workpieces and curved surfaces, further reduce feed rates, improve rigidity and optimize tool paths to avoid tool deflection, chatter marks and warpage.
Temperature is also critical. Machine warm-up, temperature-controlled workshop environment and adequate cooling all help reduce thermal deformation. Lastly, re-inspect parts after standing to verify genuine dimensional stability.
With proper processes, correct methods and strict controls, precision parts can be manufactured free from deformation, dimension shift and deliver long-term reliability.
